Designing with Hobgobbies: A Whimsical Font for Branding Projects

I was staring at a blank brand board one afternoon, the kind that feels both exciting and slightly intimidating. The project? A visual identity for a small handmade candle shop. I needed something unique—something that would make their branding stand out in a crowded market. That’s when I stumbled across Hobgobbies, a display font with a furry and creepy look that felt oddly fitting for this creative endeavor.

Hobgobbies isn’t your average typeface. It has a whimsical yet eerie charm, with soft curves and playful edges that evoke a sense of curiosity. Its design is reminiscent of a child’s drawing gone slightly surreal, which made it perfect for a brand aiming to feel both approachable and a little mysterious. I immediately saw how it could bring character to their logo and packaging.

As I started testing Hobgobbies on a logo draft, I noticed how well it balanced between being fun and professional. It didn’t scream “cheap” or “unrefined,” which is a common pitfall with quirky fonts. Instead, it added a layer of personality that felt intentional. I placed it on mockups of product labels and found that it worked beautifully as a headline font, especially when paired with a clean sans serif for body text.

The first real test came when I used Hobgobbies on a shop sign mockup. The font’s unique style caught the eye without overwhelming the design. It had a subtle creepiness that aligned with the brand’s theme of crafting candles infused with natural ingredients and a hint of magic. It wasn’t too much, but just enough to intrigue passersby.

Next, I moved to social media graphics. For an Instagram post promoting their seasonal collection, I used Hobgobbies in the headline, “Mystic Nights.” The whimsical look of the font paired perfectly with the dark, moody visuals I had planned. It gave the post a sense of mystery that encouraged engagement and comments from followers.

I also experimented with using Hobgobbies on business cards. The font’s texture and character translated well into print, making each card feel like a tiny piece of art. When paired with a minimalist serif font for the contact details, the contrast created a nice balance between playfulness and professionalism.

One thing I learned early on was that Hobgobbies works best as a display font rather than a supporting typeface. It shines in short-form text—logos, headlines, taglines—but might not be ideal for long paragraphs. That said, its unique style can still be used sparingly in editorial design, such as pull quotes or section headers, where it adds visual interest without disrupting readability.

Font pairing became an important consideration. I found that Hobgobbies looked great next to a modern sans serif like Montserrat for a clean, contemporary feel. Alternatively, pairing it with a script font like Great Vibes added a more ornate and whimsical touch, which suited the candle shop’s aesthetic even better.

When working with Hobgobbies, it’s essential to check the available styles and alternates. The font includes several variations that can be used to add depth and variation to your designs. I found that using ligatures and alternate characters helped elevate the overall look of the brand materials, making them feel more polished and intentional.

Before committing to Hobgobbies for a full brand system, I always recommend testing it in different contexts. Try it on various surfaces—digital and print—and see how it holds up under different lighting conditions. This step ensures that the font remains legible and visually appealing across all platforms.

For client work, Hobgobbies is a great choice when the brand needs to stand out with a unique personality. Whether it's for packaging design, website headers, or printed marketing materials, the font brings a sense of creativity and originality that can set a brand apart from competitors.

In my experience, Hobgobbies is a versatile tool that can be used creatively in many aspects of design. From logos to social media posts, it offers a distinctive visual language that can help build a memorable brand identity. Just remember to use it thoughtfully, ensuring that it aligns with the overall tone and message of the project.
